Syria ready to activate electricity agreement with Lebanon
Posted: 31-01-2008 , 08:17 GMT

electricityElectricity du Liban said Wednesday that the Syrian cabinet ratified an agreement under which Damascus will provide Lebanon with electricity until the end of 2008.

According to Naharnet, EDL said in a statement that it "was informed that the Syrian council of ministers ratified the agreement…singed on Thursday December 27, 2007 in Damascus" between Lebanon's main power provider and Syria's electricity institution to provide Lebanon with electricity until the end of 2008. The report added Energy and Hydraulics Minister Mohammed al-Safadi and his Syrian counterpart Ahmed Khaled al-Ali discussed during a telephone conversation ways to improve cooperation in the field of electricity.

Reports following the signing of the agreement indicated Syria would be providing 200 megawatts daily.

With the current cold winter, the electricity crisis in Lebanon is growing. Just earlier this week, eight civilians were killed in Beirut during clashes between Lebanese troops and young Shiite men protesting electricity cuts. The demonstrators said the outages had left them with about six hours of electricity a day, compared with 21 hours for parts of central Beirut.

It is not enough what syria has stolen from Lebanon for the past 30 years, now they want to sell us electricity. And it is understandebale for her followers and puppets are many in our country, and it is berri's shiaa people who are getting paid by electricity du Liban without doing anything, just because their leader is a "partner" with syrian president Assad. Those officials should be removed from office to prison cells, where they will think of every penny they stole for themselves and the syrians. thank you.

Dear Said, In case you are not aware, the French (and Brits) carved up Greater Syria and increased a tiny autonomous region known as Mount Lebanon and created Lebanon. Much the same way as Israel was created. Greater Syria includes the land that is Greater Lebanon minus Mount Lebanon. Like it or not, Lebanon per se is part of Syria and if you agree to this very important point, then I suppose we can let you have some of our electricity! I think President Assad has done an excellent thing in helping our "Syrian" brothers but DO NOT ACCUSE THE SYRIANS of stealing. This is very, very wrong and a serious accusation to make. DO NOT BITE THE HAND THAT FEEDS, CLOTHES and WARMS YOU..... Maz

If only the Lebanese people deserved such treatment from the Syrians. They accuse the Syrians of this and that and expect to be fed, housed and looked after during the last Israeli invasion and now expect to be 'powered up'? I think they have to reap what they have sown and if they want to be self-governed as they say, they have to be self-dependant. Syrians suffer with electricity shortages themselves and I think the priority lies with the Syrian people and not with the hypocritical, two-faced Lebanese population.

If the last two comments are indicative of Syrian attitudes towards Lebanon then the Lebanese must be bonkers to but power from them. Besides sending them Syrians to take jobs in Lebanon and funding terror and political assassinations, Syria has little to offer Lebanon. They are right about one thing: Lebanon (as with Iraq) is just like Israel - in that their neighbors hate them and will do anything to undermine and ultimately destroy them.

Actually they are indicative of a Brit, living and working in Syria who is looking from the outside, in. I see the big picture unlike the Lebanese who have narrow vision and see what what they're told to see.

Did everyone forget that 50.000 Syrian soldiers died over the years becuase of Lebanon!!!! I was there in 2006 when Israiel and Lebanon were in a conflict and i saw how Syria opened arms for the lebenese people in need .So go and study your history before you make a circus of politcal veiws lol......   I saw the welcome of Syrians towards the fleeing Lebanese last year.We opened schools, mosques & homes. We fed them meat and fish, better than Syrians. All they could say was "We don't want food, we want Money!". How sad and disgraceful.

Thanx "maz" you "syrians" opened the schools, homes, fed the hungry "meat and fish" and they said we don't want food we want money. I want to know why you are saying this? You all did a great thing by helping them, why are you complaining? don't help them the next time. By the way all of this is so superstitious, we are at war, before, now, and in the future, look at the big picture!
