As part of a global co-operation to protect the environment, GPIC in co-operation with Technoment of Italy and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Company, Japan will set up a carbon dioxide recycling plant to be the first petrochemical company in the Middle East to use such environmentally friendly technology.  The new technology is designed to reduce carbon dioxide emissions which are responsible for climate change. 

In a statement, Mr. Abdul Rahman Jawahery, General Manager said with this system GPIC will be the first petrochemical company to use a special system designed in Japan for disposal of solid waste.

A special GPIC working team visited Japan in early April to familiarize themselves with the manufacture of this system and to learn about the results of research conducted on testing and use of the system and evaluation of the results according to the most advanced technological systems. 

The General Manager said the Company had already co-operated with Japan's Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Company which built the GPIC urea plant in 1998 and was completed on schedule. It is considered as one of the best plants in the world for manufacture of urea.

Earlier Japan's Ambassador to the Kingdom of Bahrain visited GPIC's plants and was introduced to the Bahraini management in charge of this company. His visit included tours of the plants and environmental projects.  He celebrated with the executive management the 10th anniversary of completing the urea plant, which is considered as one of the best plants of its kind in the world. 

The Ambassador underlined that concern with the environment was a major global issue for which Japan paid particular attention and enforced strict legislation.  He said he was impressed with what he had seen at GPIC about the quality of operations and conservation of the environment. 

The new carbon dioxide plant is scheduled to be completed in January 2010 and thus GPIC will be one of the first Middle Eastern companies to use such Japanese technologies in its Complex.
